There are a wide range of camping stoves out there, from simple single burner stoves to multi burner stoves with ovens.

The most popular tend to be 2 burner camping stoves, as they strike the best compromise between effectiveness, cost and portability.

This buying guide is about giving you the best camping stove review for 2022.  It’s from our perspective, but I’m sure it will help you find some valuable information to make your decision on what is the best camping stove.

1. Wind Protection – the capability to shield the burners and the utensils on it from wind is the most important consideration when buying a camping gas stove. It doesn’t matter how much heat the burners produce, or how efficient it is or how hi-tech the ignition is; if it gets blown out by the wind then nothing else matters.  Have you ever sat there and waited forever for a kettle to boil on an unshielded burner?  You know the feeling, I’m sure!
2. Burner Output – How much heat does each burner put out. It’s measured in BTU’s; a measure how much heat is generated by the camping gas stove burner.  The higher the number, the quicker it will boil a pot of water. 

There is a link between the BTU and gas consumption.  That heating energy has to come from somewhere.  If you look at the specs for any camping stove, it will give you the gas consumption in grams per hour (gm/hr). 

You can work out from that how long a cylinder will last before needing a refill/replacement.  This is particularly important if using some of the smaller butane/propane cylinders.  For example; if the gas stove consumes 500 gm/hr and you have a 1kg cylinder, you’ll need to refill after two hours of use [1000gms/500gm/hr = 2 hrs].

3. Portability – basically how compact does it fold down for stowing away. Also, weight is an important factor.  Some of the larger camping gas stoves can get up in weight and size. While still being portable camping stoves, they take up that additional space.
4. Durability – all camping gear gets knocked around to some degree. It does with the camping experience.  It needs to be robust and well-made to make sure that things don’t fall off or break.
5. Warranty – if something goes wrong, how long does the supplier/manufacturer cover it for. Minimum is 1 year (by law), but the better ones will back their product by giving you 3 years or more. 
6. Technology – this covers the ignition type, heating efficiency, construction, ease of cleaning and safety. Basically, how well does it do the job it’s designed to do. Pretty much reflected in the price.

Ensure you’re always in a properly ventilated area, otherwise the fumes can cause serious harm, even death. 

If in any doubt, always read the instructions on how to use your camping stove safely.

Wind protection, super high output burners, larger cooking area, very reasonable gas consumption at 524 gm/hr for the rated burner performance, and stainless steel where it matters. 

The only downside is its weight at 5 kgs.  But this is a reflection of the quality of the unit overall.  It won’t break in a hurry.

You’re looking at robust, heavy duty units that operate in all temperatures (including very cold areas where gas camping stoves start to have real issues), have excellent wind resistance and can fit larger pots and pans.  

They are incredibly fuel efficient, despite their lower BTU rating, put out a lot of heat and last for years.  Some users have had the same unit for 20+ years, and swear by them.

The only issue with them is the choice of liquid fuel.  Standard 91 unleaded can cause them to soot up over time because it’s a poor-quality fuel all round.  They’ll work just fine, but if you get Shellite fuel they will work perfectly forever and a day.

Here’s one for you to consider if you’re looking for a basic camping gas stove; no frills and doesn’t cost a lot of money.  It has reasonable output on 10,000+ BTU per burner, adequate wind-shield protection and folds down to brief case size.

The downside is it requires you to light it manually (gas lighter, match), the quality is OK and has a gas consumption at 439 gm/hr.

However, for less than $50 if you shop around, it’s not bad value. 

This style of compact camping stove tends to attract mixed buyer ratings.  Take that with a grain of salt, they’re basic units where you get what you pay for.  They work just fine.

A basic portable camping stove with grill, uses the small butane ‘pressure pack’ cartridges and comes with Piezo ignition. 

They come with a non-stick pan and tempered glass lid.  It’s one less frypan you have to carry.

Because of the design they are pretty good in the wind, but the cooking grill can lose heat due to the cooling effect of stronger breezes.

Prices vary widely for this one as the same unit is sold under different brands.  Shop around and you can get it for around $80 (not $129 – $139 at certain high-profile outdoor stores). At the lower price, they’re a good investment.

They are becoming increasingly popular where the traditional camp oven on the open fire is no longer allowed in camping areas.

They are (obviously) much larger than the camping stove burner only units.  However, they have their place in the outdoors lifestyle.  RV’ers love them as they are the complete outback camping stove.

We own an oven-only model, and it works well.  Particularly for cooking comfort food like the delightful baked rice pudding.  It has a built-in oven thermometer to monitor the temperature.

There are a few cons – 1) the size and weight 2) the gas burners tend to have a lower BTU rating 3) the oven itself is not large.

Having said all that, I’d recommend taking a close look at one if you’re the one who enjoys back-to-basics camp cooking.
